The theme for this week’s Project 52 is “Rural” – I have been too busy to participate the last few weeks, but I was determined to get back into it this time. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of the theme are golden fields, but living in suburbia, I had to settle for a lovely green park. So Chase and I went for a walk and tried to find a shady spot, which wasn’t too easy as it was midday and very sunny! But despite the harsh lighting conditions and almost walking into a terrifying spider web, I managed to get a few nice shots of Chase. This one’s my favourite:

For the first time, I’m including a dog other than Chase in Project 52. This week’s time is “Tails”, and while Chase has a cute, fluffy tail that he sometimes wraps around himself when he sleeps (a bit like the Firefox icon), I love this photo that I took of a shelter dog named Freckles. I love how graphic it is, and the contrast between Freckles, his spots, and the grass. Since this photo has been taken, Freckles has found his forever home – which is not a surprise, because let me assure you that his face is just as cute as his butt :)

For week 2 of the “Project 52 Weeks”, the theme is Joy. If you missed the first blog post from last week, you can see it here: Project 52, week 1: Introductions.

For the last week, I’ve been racking my brain and trying to think of something clever for this topic. After a while, I came up with the idea of photographing Chase in midst of all his toys (trust me, he has LOTS) – toys are fun, right? So I gathered all his balls and ropes and stuffed toys, sat him down in the middle, and took a few photos. But somehow, the concept of joy didn’t really come across at all. So I thought about it a bit more – what IS joy to me?

The answer was ridiculously easy. Chase’s big smile. His furry ears that flop as he walks next to me.

A lot of the time, the simplest solution is the best one, and the little things matter most. Not to get philosophical, but while I was trying to think of ways to be clever and incorporate lots of props, I missed what was actually important and the truest interpretation of joy. So I just put Chase in front of the sunshine-yellow wall in my dining room, promised him yoghurt and liver treats, and there you go. You gotta admit, those ears are stinking cute.

Every year, one of my resolutions is inevitably to be more creative – take more photos, take more interesting photos, draw more, take up sewing, what have you. So this year, I have decided to participate in the 52 Weeks Project of the Beautiful Beasties network, a network of professional pet photographers. Every week for the next year, I will be taking a photo for a specific theme and post it on Friday.

This week’s theme is “Introductions”. So I’d like to introduce you to the dog I will be photographing – my Sheltie, Chase!

Here are some random facts about him:

Chase is a Shetland Sheepdog, or Sheltie. Never a Lassie dog or a Mini Collie ;)

Food is everything. When I’m cooking, I always have a furry shadow waiting for bits to fall down.

He is the biggest sook you will ever meet. Once an ant bit his paw, so he laid down in the middle of the street and refused to go on. I had to carry him home.

Chase has had a very bad skin condition since he was about 6 months old – probably perivascular dermatitis – and at one point, he had lost almost half his fur. It took a long time, hard work and many different approaches, but he is much better now! He is only missing a bit of fur on his paws now.

He know lots of tricks, including Bow, Play Dead, Sit Pretty, Spin and Speak. I even taught him to open cabinets. That seems like a good idea, right?

Anyway, here are the photos, taken at the beautiful Woorim Beach on Bribie Island:

And this is me. Hi!

Another cool thing about this weekly project is that we create a blog circle of participating photographers – meaning we all link to each other, so you can see all the photos and the different takes on the theme. So now, head on over to Cahlean of St. Cloud MN based About A Dog Photography and keep clicking the links until you end up back here!
